Govt acts may damage democracy: Nawaz
* PML-N chief says some individuals in govt pitching politicians against judiciary
Staff Report
LAHORE: The government has taken several measures that can damage democracy in the country, PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif said Thursday.
Addressing a press conference along with Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif at the Lahore airport before departing for London, the PML-N chief said the government should respect the judiciary and its verdicts by implementing them in letter and spirit.
He said some individuals in the government were pitching politicians against the judiciary and cited NAB’s letter to the Supreme Court as evidence. He was of the view that every institution should work within its defined constitutional limits and urged the government not to assume the role of a superior judiciary.
He stressed that Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani should hold meetings with the provincial governments, armed forces and intelligence agencies before convening a national conference to chalk out a strategy to counter terrorism in the country.
Talking about the controversy between the Punjab and Sindh governments over the reopening of the Chashma-Jhelum Link Canal, Nawaz said the issue should not be politicised and that “there will be no compromise on Punjab’s water share”.
