Journalists observe black day
LAHORE: Journalists and civil society members took out rallies on Saturday to observe a ‘black day’ against the resolution passed by the Punjab Assembly to condemn the media.
In Lahore, a large number of politicians, lawyers and human rights activists joined journalists in their protest demonstrations outside the Punjab Assembly. Members of the Supreme Court Bar Association and the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) took part in the rally. The protesters burnt two effigies of the Punjab chief minister and chanted slogans against his government for taking the step. They said the resolution was a calculated move to undermine media’s role in the country.
In Islamabad, the journalists staged a protest outside the National Press Club, where protesters said the protests would continue until the Punjab Assembly withdraws the resolution.
In Quetta, members of the Balochistan Union of Journalists and the Quetta Union of Journalists held separate demonstrations outside the Quetta Press Club against the resolution. The journalists were carrying placards inscribed with slogans against the Punjab government.
In Peshawar, the Khyber Union of Journalists (KhUJ) along with members of the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) and the All Pakistan Newspaper Employees’ Confederation held a protest demonstration against the Punjab government.
Similar protests were also held in Mirpur, Murree, Attock, Multan, Mirpur Khas, Muzaffargarh, Hyderabad, Chaman, Khuzdar, Mastung and Lasbela. staff report
