Strike keeps Held Kashmir on the boil

SRINAGAR: A strike against Indian rule closed most shops, schools and government offices in Indian-held Kashmir for a second consecutive day on Monday, though newspapers were able to resume publishing after restrictions on journalists were lifted. Key separatist leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was placed under house arrest to stop him from leading a protest march later on Monday in Srinagar, a police officer said on condition of anonymity. Kashmiri leaders are often barred from leaving their homes to join street protests. Public transportation stayed off the roads after the All-Parties Hurriyat Conference called the strike to protest Indian rule. Some private vehicles, however, were seen on the streets. Curfew-like restrictions continued in Srinagar and two southern towns following weekend clashes. ap
