SC dismisses Rana Maqbool’s plea against arrest warrants

* Sindh ex-IG has been accused of conspiring to kill Zardari when the latter was imprisoned in Karachi’s Central Jail in 1999

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed an appeal by former Sindh inspector general Rana Maqbool against a judgement of the Sindh High Court.

A three-member bench comprising Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani, Justice Khilji Arif Hussain and Justice Asif Saeed Khosa was hearing Maqbool’s leave to appeal against the Sindh High Court (SHC) judgement dated April 28, 2009.

In his application Maqbool has said, “The court may graciously suspend operation of the judgement dated April 28, 2009, passed in Criminal Revision No 129 of 2006 filed by President Asif Ali Zardari.”

The SHC had set aside an order of the additional sessions judge and revived the cases against Maqbool, declaring him a proclaimed offender and issuing arrest warrants for him.

The Lahore High Court had granted a protective bail to Punjab Prosecution Secretary Rana Maqbool to appear before a competent court in Sindh.

Maqbool has been accused of hatching a conspiracy to kill President Zardari when he was imprisoned in Karachi’s Central Jail in 1999.

Sensing a threat from the PPP and the MQM, he had sought the transfer of a criminal case against him from Karachi to Islamabad, Balochistan or Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Maqbool’s counsel Akram Sheikh requested the SC to order the transfer of Maqbools’s case because he feared for his life in Sindh.
