1,340 FESCO appointments declared illegal
Staff Report
LAHORE: Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah of the Lahore High Court on Thursday declared more than 1,340 appointments in the Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO) illegal. The appointments had been made on the recommendations of Water and Power Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf.
The judge issued the verdict on 49 identical petitions. The petitioners’ counsel submitted that his clients filed applications for the posts of assistant lineman, meter reader, commercial assistant and naib qasid, which had been advertised in November 2008. He said it was a condition for the applicants to be residents of Faisalabad, Toba Tek Singh, Khushab, Mianwali or Sargodha.
The counsel said his clients applied for the posts, but were rejected, adding that the authorities made appointments at the behest of Pervaiz Ashraf, surpassing the merit.
He said the candidates who were appointed were residents of Chakwal and Gujjar Khan – Ashraf’s constituency – alleging that Ashraf accommodated his voters by giving them appointments beyond merit.
The judge sought examination records from FESCO regarding the posts, which it failed to produce. After hearing out both parties, the judge declared the appointments illegal.
