PPP willing to legislate on fake degree issue: Awan

By Tahir Rashid

RAWALPINDI: Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs Babar Awan has said that the Pakistan People’s Party is ready to take the initiative for legislation on the issue of bogus degrees, provided all political parties unite on a single draft.

He was talking to reporters at the office of PPP leader Sohail Pasha. “During the regime of Gen (r) Pervez Musharraf, there were almost 160 cases of fake degree holders pending with the courts. Nobody raised a voice over the issue then, and now when the Supreme Court has taken up the matter, some elements are blowing it out of proportion,” Awan said.

He said the whole nation knew that the issue of bogus degrees was raised to exert pressure on the government to hold mid-term elections, but the PPP had thwarted all such conspiracies.

“Only by-elections will be held on seats falling vacant,” Awan said, adding that Article 270B of the Constitution assured the government of completing five years in office.

The minister said the recent round of Pak-India talks proved that the PPP-led government had taken a strong stance on all issues, including Kashmir, which had forced India to change its stance time and again.

He said the negotiation process between Pakistan and India was a healthy sign.
