Only politics of reconciliation can resolve issues: PM

* Gilani says coalition partners not consulted on Kayani’s extension as it was an administrative issue
* Gift of democracy will be presented to FATA once ongoing operation is complete

LAHORE: Politics of reconciliation is the only way the country can come out of the current crises, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani said on Sunday.

Talking to reporters at the Prime Minister’s House, Gilani said all political parties and institutions had to join hands to bring the country out of the crises.

The prime minister said the PPP-led government was following its manifesto and fulfilling its promises to the masses. He said the PPP wanted to go forward taking all parties and the institutions along with it, adding that only the civilian government could tackle the challenges facing the country.

The nation was united against the terrorism for the first time in the history of Pakistan, he said.

Admin issue: Regarding the decision of the extension in the tenure of Chief of Army Staff Ashfaq Kayani, the prime minister said the decision was “an administrative affair to which the government did not feel necessary to hold consultation with political parties”.

Gilani said he had tried telephoning Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif to take him into confidence over the extension issue, but he was not available.

“Two hours prior to taking the decision, I tried contacting Nawaz, but could not get in touch with him because he had left for London,” the prime minister said.

He said the government would complete its tenure, adding that the concept of a two-thirds majority had come to an end, and now coalition governments would come into existence.

Gift: He said the Tribal Areas would be given the “gift of democracy”, after the military operation in the area was completed. The prime minister said the Kalabagh Dam had become a victim of politics. Gilani said Pakistan and India could not afford a war, and both the countries would have to resolve their issues through talks. app/daily times monitor
