Sindh govt declares flood emergency

 

KARACHI: The provincial government on Friday declared an emergency across the province keeping in view the increased flow of the Indus River due to torrential rains and especially as a flood was likely to pass through the province on August 3. The leaves of employees, including those of the departments of irrigation and power, revenue, police, health, relief, civil defence, education, livestock, transport and jails, have been cancelled, while those already on leave have been asked to immediately report to their respective departments. Meanwhile, Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah has convened a meeting today (Saturday) of the provincial cabinet to discuss the situation. Earlier, the Sindh Irrigation Department informed a high-level meeting chaired by the chief minister, that a flood, similar to those in 1976 and 1992, would likely pass through the province on August 3. staff report
