SC summons Sanaullah over statement against Babar Awan

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court, on Monday, summoned Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah in a case filed against him by former federal minister Babar Awan.

The apex court’s senior most judge Justice Javed Iqbal heard the suo motu case in his chamber on the application of former law minister Babar Awan against Sanaullah, who had declared him (Babar Awan) liable to be killed. Babar appeared in Justice Iqbal’s chamber along with the full record of the case. After hearing his arguments, the court issued summons for Sanaullah, directing him to appear in the chamber on July 7. Babar had on June 20 filed a petition in the Supreme Court against Sanaullah, contending that his life was in danger. He requested the court to constitute a judicial commission to examine the records and witnesses in order to enforce and protect the rights he is entitled to under Article 4 and 9 of constitution.

While talking to media, Sanaullah had said that Babar Awan was “liable to be murdered.” Babar stated in the petition that the statement had placed his fundamental right of life in serious jeopardy, adding that the Punjab law minister’s statement cannot be taken lightly under any circumstances. The former federal law minister claimed that he had learnt that Shahbaz Sharif government in Punjab was desperate to arrest him on any false charge or pretext and then facilitate an attack on his life in jail, police station or a local court. Babar claimed that some outlaws at or near Fort Manro (a border area of Punjab and Balochistan) were contacted on behalf of the executive of Punjab through some gangsters by the government officials.
