Don’t destabilise political system, warns Gilani
* PM says masses won’t support any grand alliance
* Says there is no danger to democracy
* PPP in contact with MQM
Staff Report
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani said on Tuesday that the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) government had been elected by the masses who would never support any undemocratic move to derail the present political system.
“Do not destabilise the political system. We have been elected by the people of Pakistan,” warned the premier, adding, his party would not allow anyone to destabilise the democratic set-up. “Those who want to derail the government will be disappointed,” he held. Gilani, however, said the constitution provided a procedure to remove any government. “If anyone wants to remove the government they should adopt a proper procedure.”
Talking to journalists at Pakistan Monument, Shakarparian, after inaugurating Zero Point Interchange and Dualisation of Lehtar Road projects and performing the groundbreaking of CDA’s Park Enclave Housing Scheme, Gilani said that neither there was any alternative of democracy, nor the masses would ever support any undemocratic move. “There is no danger to democracy. The democracy will continue, there is no alternative of democracy. Any undemocratic move will not be supported by the masses, politicians or by you (media).” To a media query about the MQM’s parting ways with the PPP, the prime minister said the ruling party was in continuous contact with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement leadership. “They (MQM) are still our coalition partners and are in the government as well.”
Gilani, to another question, said if Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid’s (PML-Q) President Chaudhry Shujaat played a role in this respect, “we (the government) will welcome it”. “We want to take along all our coalition partners,” he remarked.
In reply to another question about the suspension of Zafar Qureshi, additional director general of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), Gilani said the official had been suspended over disciplinary grounds and an inquiry in this respect would be assigned to a BS-22 officer. He also rejected the impression that there was any confrontation between the government and Supreme Court, saying “some elements were allegedly trying to give an impression that there are differences between the government and apex court. It is wrong”.
About the issue of supply of compressed natural gas to filling stations, the premier said the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Resources would resolve the issue, adding, the representatives of CNG associations had also met him.
Responding to a query about the price of CNG and petroleum products, he said the Petroleum Ministry was the appropriate forum to speak on the subject and ultimately it was “the Cabinet which takes decision on such matters”. The prime minister congratulated the people of Azad Jammu and Kashmir for electing representatives of their choice, and said the new AJK government would be formed after the election of special seats for technocrats, women and ulema.
