KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Chief Altaf Hussain has assured President Asif Ali Zardari that his party will extend its full cooperation to the government while staying in the opposition.

A statement issued from the MQM’s London Secretariat on Friday says Altaf welcomed the positive steps mentioned in the statement issued from the President’s House.

For strengthening of democracy, he said, elimination of extremism and economic stability the MQM would welcome government’s positive measures. The MQM chief’s statement has overshadowed all news from the government sources that gripped the news channels, stating that the MQM is going to rejoin the government.

Sources said that Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, during his recent visit to the MQM headquarters at Nine-Zero, played a major reconciliatory role in striking a patch up between the PPP and the MQM leaderships.

There were also unconfirmed reports pouring in on Friday, suggesting that the PPP government had accepted all the MQM demands and Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan would rejoin his office soon. The reports also suggested that MQM would gradually rejoin the provincial government and then the federal government. When contacted, the PPP office bearers neither denied nor confirmed that the MQM was rejoining the provincial and federal governments.
