FIA gets 4-day remand of Anjum Aqeel in bogus cheque case
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) MNA Anjum Aqeel has been handed over to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on an additional four-day physical remand, and the FIA investigation team probing his case has been changed, Geo News reported.
After the completion of three-day remand in the bogus cheque case, the FIA presented Aqeel in the court of a senior civil judge. The FIA had requested the court to grant it an additional seven-day remand but the court only approved four days remand for Aqeel.
Prior to this the defense attorney informed the media that the investigation team for the case had been changed and a new five-member team had been formed.
Over in Rawalpindi an anti-terrorism court heard the case pertaining to Anjum Aqeel's escape from police custody. Out of the eleven accused in the case, three were released while eight were sent to jail on judicial remand.
Anjum Aqeel was arrested in the federal capital on July 15 for his involvement in the National Police Foundation scam case. Upon his arrival at the Shalimar police station his supporters attacked the police and helped Aqeel escape. The MNA turned himself over to the authorities 24 hours later. On July 19 a judicial magistrate ordered that Aqeel be handed over to the police on a three day physical remand. Earlier on the same day an anti-terrorism court had sent him to jail on a 14-day judicial remand.
The PML-N has reacted strongly against the actions of the MNA. The disciplinary committee of the party on Wednesday (July 20) issued a show-cause notice to Anjum Aqeel Khan, asking him to explain his position regarding the police cases registered against him and his attempt to escape from police custody.
