PML-N using judicial card after defeat: Babar

* Ex-minister asks SC to take notice of CM’s bid to involve judiciary into politics

Staff Report

LAHORE: The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Babar Awan on Tuesday alleged that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) was using judicial card after defeat in elections.

Reacting to Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif’s statement that the PML-N would not tolerate contempt of courts, the former federal law minister asked Supreme Court to take notice of Shahbaz’s attempt to involve judiciary into politics.

Addressing a press conference, he came down hard on the PML-N leadership and said the party was trying to create a rift between the provinces and using the judicial card. Terming Shahbaz Sharif’s statement declaration of war against democracy, he said that these threats were not more than a storm in a teacup and PPP knew how to tackle such political tactics. Babar said the PML-N should desist from projecting itself as defendant of the judiciary.

He said that videos of the PML-N leaders and workers attacking courts were still available in archives. The former law minister questioned the integrity and impartiality of the Supreme Court, saying no suo moto action was taken against corruption by the Punjab government.

He said Shahbaz used third-grade language against the president, which would not be tolerated. He advised the PML-N to abstain from “hurling war threats at the PPP as it was in no mood to take all this”. The PPP leader said the next elections would be a nightmare for the PML-N, as “people would hold the corrupt rulers accountable”.
