Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai released

ISLAMABAD: Kashmiri American Council Executive Director Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai, who was produced before a US court on Wednesday on the charge of attempting to influence US lawmakers while working for Pakistan’s spy agency, has been released on $100,000 bond. Dr Fai, who appeared before the US District Court in Alexandria, Virginia for a detention hearing, was released and placed under home detention, KMS reported. Magistrate Judge John Anderson rejected the argument of a US prosecutor, who claimed that Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai represented a flight risk and should be kept in jail. Fai, a native of occupied Kashmir, was arrested last week. At a federal court hearing in Alexandria, Virginia, the judge ruled that Fai must post $100,000 in bond. US Magistrate Judge John Anderson released Fai into the custody of his wife and placed him under home detention with electronic monitoring. Fai’s travel is restricted to the Washington, DC area. Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai’s arrest had triggered protest demonstrations in occupied Kashmir and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. All Hurriyet leaders had expressed concern over his arrest and demanded his immediate release. Dr Fai has been strongly advocating the Kashmiris’ right to self-determination for the last 35 years. agencies
