Sardar Yaqub likely to be new AJK president

MUZAFFARABAD: The new president for Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) will be elected today, Geo News reported. Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) has nominated former AJK Prime Minister Sardar Yaqub Khan instead of Chaudhry Latif Akbar while Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has nominated Khan Bahadur Khan.

According to the schedule released by the Election Commission, members of Legislative Assembly (LA) will participate in secret balloting in an LA chamber from 11 am to 2 pm.

PPP members protested in Muzaffarabad after Haji Yaqub Khan was nominated for presidentship instead of Chaudhry Latif Akbar.

Khan had been a member of LA in 2001 and 2006 while in 2001, he also served as the health minister in Sardar Sikandar Hayat’s cabinet.

He moved a no confidence motion against Sardar Ateeq Ahmed Khan in 2006 and remained the Azad Kashmir prime minister for nine months.

Haji Yaqub Khan joined the PPP before recent elections.

It may be recalled that Chaudhry Latif Akbar had earlier refused to accept the office of Speaker of AJK Assembly and insisted for nomination for the office of the President after Chaudhry Abdul Majeed was chosen by the PPP as Prime Minister of AJK.

For violation of the party decision, Ch Latif Akbar was asked by the party leadership to explain the reasons for non-acceptance of the offer.
