Govt dispels notion of clash among state institutions
* Decides that parliament will be strengthened and its supremacy will be ensured
ISLAMABAD/LAHORE: The heads of the federal and provincial governments, on Friday, dispelled the notion of the clash among state institutions, and expressed satisfaction that there was no danger of any tussle among them (institutions).
A meeting of all the provincial chief ministers and governors co-chaired by President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani at the Presidency discussed overall political situation and problems faced by the country.
The meeting decided that parliament would be strengthened and its supremacy would be ensured. It was also decided that no compromise would be made on the authority of the executive.
According to the presidential spokesman, Farhatullah Babar, the high-level meeting decided that parliament would be taken into confidence over the tension between the government and judiciary, reported a private television.
Babar also said the meeting ruled out the possibility of any conflict between state institutions. “They hoped that all institutions will work within their constitutional ambit,” he added. During the meeting, President Zardari said that parliament was supreme over all other institutions. “Parliament is answerable to the people,” added the president.
The provincial chief executives reiterated their resolve to ensure respect to all state institutions and that they worked in a spirit of harmony and within the parameters of trichotomy of power as enshrined in the constitution.
They reaffirmed their resolve to provide good governance, eliminate corruption and provide relief to the people by addressing problems of power shortage, price hike and unemployment on priority basis. They decided that strict measures would be taken to check price hike and black marketing during the month of Ramazan.
The meeting also reposed confidence in the leadership of President Zardari and Premier Gilani and the steps taken by them to strengthen parliament and state institutions.
Punjab Governor Sardar Muhammad Latif Khosa, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Masood Kausar, Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Amir Haider Hoti, Balochistan Chief Minister Nawab Muhammad Aslam Raisani, Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Mehdi Shah and others attended the meeting, which was briefed on the legal matters between the government and apex court by Senator Babar Awan. daily times monitor/app
