Bloodshed continues in Karachi, 16 killed
* Activists of MQM, Sunni Tehreek among those killed * Rival ethnic groups exchange heavy fire in Landhi, Sherpao Colony * Police, Rangers stay away from troubled areas

KARACHI: Bloodshed continued to haunt the commercial capital on Saturday, as 16 more fell prey to the senseless violence and string of target killings.
Latest fatalities include activists of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), Sunni Tehreek (ST), and a cop.
Sherpao Colony and Landhi 89 remained tense as two persons, Azeem Qadir, 35, and Dilshad Hanif, 34, were killed by unidentified men at Bengali Para, Hussaini Chowrangi and Sherpao Colony. Intense firing ensued in the areas and rival ethnic groups started tossing hand grenades and bullets at each other.
Police and Rangers stayed out of the troubled areas. Two brothers, Sadaqat, 32, and his younger brother, Murtaza, 22, were shot dead as they were sitting in their coaster van (JE-5712) at Bismillah Stop, Manghopir Road in Pak Colony police remits.
Police said initially the victims’ political affiliation could not be established and motive behind the incident was not ascertained.
Dead bodies of two young men were found from Malir River within the jurisdiction of Korangi Industrial Area police station. Police said the victims were shot dead and had also several marks of torture. An activist of MQM was shot dead in Baba Wilayat Ali Shah Colony Orangi Town in the precincts of Iqbal Market police station.
The victim, 32-year-old Mohammad Zahid, was standing outside his home, when unidentified armed men sprayed him with bullets. A police officer was shot dead near Ranchore Line cloth market within the remits of Nabi Bux police station. The victim, Abdul Rahim, was the resident of Kalakot Police Lane. A landlord of interior Sindh was gunned down near Safora Chowrangi within the limits of Gulistan-e-Jauhar police station.
Police officials said 55-year-old Ghulam Rabbani was gunned down when he went outside his home to buy milk.
An activist of ST was shot dead while a passerby was injured in Godhra Colony in the jurisdiction of New Karachi Industrial Area police station. In Landhi’s Khurramabad area, 23-year-old Umair was shot dead. Police said the deceased was a washing machine mechanic and was killed after he was kidnapped.
Also in Landhi, Gul Shah, 44, was killed near Timber market. Police said the victim hailed from Waziristan. A man was shot dead in Usmanabad in the remits of Garden police station. The victim was identified as Mohammad Tariq.
A young man was shot dead near Park Street in Bokhari Colony within the limits of Orangi Town police station. Identity of the victim is yet to be ascertained.
A cable operator was shot dead near Nullah stop in the limits of New Karachi police station. A man was shot dead, while three others were injured as a result of firing on a hardware shop near Abdullah Heights in the remits of Gulistan Jauhar police station. Police shifted the injured to JPMC where Abdul Aziz succumbed to his injuries.
