Police register FIR against FIA chief

ISLAMABAD: Islamabad police has registered cases against several officers of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), including its Director General Fayyaz Ahmed Leghari, for providing the Supreme Court false information against MPA Tariq Alloana in the dual nationality case.

Police sources on Thursday said that the FIR registered at the Secretariat Police Station names the FIA chief and other officers as the accused. A copy of the report has also been forwarded to the SC Registrar’s Office. Earlier on Wednesday, a three-judge Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, while hearing a case relating to parliamentarians having dual nationality, had ordered the additional registrar to lodge a criminal complaint against the FIA chief and other officers for providing misleading information about Tariq Alloana, an MPA from Mandi Bahauddin, that he was a US citizen.

The chief justice had expressed displeasure over the provision of “erroneous information” on Alloana’s travel details. During the court proceedings, the FIA apologised for confirming false allegations against Alloana. During a previous hearing, Alloana had informed the court that he had never travelled to any country except Saudi Arabia. When a copy of an American passport allegedly belonging to him was shown to him, he had said that the picture on the passport showed it was not him. inp
