Political stability must for economic prosperity: PM
* Raja says he would try to end unscheduled load shedding in minimum possible time
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf on Saturday said Pakistan needed political continuity to become a stronger and respectable member of the comity of nations.
Talking to notables from his constituency at the Prime Minister’s House, the prime minister said, “Pakistan has vast natural resources, which are many times more than the oil rich countries of the world but could not be exploited due to political uncertainty and disruption of political process.” He said economic development and the corresponding prosperity were intertwined with political stability. The notables from his constituency, while congratulating him on assuming the office of the chief executive of the country, said, “We are proud of him because he is the first prime minister of the country from the Potohar region and also because he is one of those who have risen to this top position due to hard work and undiluted commitment to the ideology of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and its founding leaders.”
The prime minister regretted that though copper and gold deposits in Balochistan lay under vast areas, the Thar coal reserves were the third-largest in the world, about more than 40,000MW potential of hydro power generation existed in Gilgit-Baltistan, and there were fertile lands in Punjab, the people of the country were stricken with energy deficiency and the vicious circle of poverty was expanding across the country.
He said he would try to rid the people of the torture of unscheduled load shedding in the minimum possible time, as a short-term measure. The democratic government had also undertaken long-term projects to resolve the problem on permanent basis, he added. app
