British cop dismissed for abusing Pakistani

* Higher officials say will not tolerate irresponsible behaviour

LONDON: A British police officer was dismissed over allegations of abusing a Pakistani takeaway manager at a railway station in the central London.

Philip Juhasz, 31, of the London Metropolitan Police hurled abuse at a Pakistani, Umer Nazir, 23, at the Delice de France snacks kiosk at King’s Cross railway station last September. A judge cleared him of racism when his legal team appealed several weeks later but his conviction for abusing the man remained. Senior officers said Juhasz was dismissed after a misconduct hearing for ‘breaching standards of professional behaviour’. The case was one of the 10 referred to the police watchdog as a storm of controversy battered the organisation over widespread allegations of racism.

Juhasz was arrested by British Transport Police officers after abusing Umer Nazir on September 22 last year. Nazir said Juhasz was off-duty and drunk and abused him when he refused to give him food on a cheap price. The worker accused him of saying “do you know who I am? I’m a police officer’ and go back to your country (Pakistan)”.

Commander Peter Spindler, of the Directorate of Professional Standards, said Juhasz was sacked after being accused of gross misconduct for failing to show respect and courtesy. He said, “The dismissal of this officer demonstrates that the Met will not tolerate drunken and abusive behaviour. Anyone found acting in such a way will be dealt with swiftly and robustly. This sends out a clear message to staff and the public that our officers and staff are expected to maintain high standards of behaviour both on and off duty.”

A Scotland Yard spokesman while talking to the Daily Times said, “A Metropolitan police officer has been dismissed for breaching standards of professional behaviour.”
