Parliament has every right to legislate on all issues
* President says everyone must accord parliament due respect
* No law bars president from meeting with his constituents
KARACHI: President Asif Ali Zardari on Thursday said since parliament was elected by sovereign people of Pakistan and it was the voice of the masses, it had every right to continue legislating on all issues of public concern and welfare of the people.
Addressing a gathering of ministers, senators, MNAs, MPAs and divisional and district office-bearers of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) at the Chief Minister's House, the president said it was everyone’s duty to accord parliament every respect it was entitled to.
The president said being the real representatives of the people, parliament reigned supreme in a democratic set-up. He said a president was part of parliament under the constitution and he (the president) interacts and meets parliamentarians as parliaments were his constituency. He said no law barred the president from meeting with his constituents.
Zardari said for the stability and smoothness of the system, it was necessary that every state institution respected the mandate of other institutions. He said some institutions might at time appear to be overstepping their mandate in developing democracies on their way towards maturity, but this was part of the evolutionary process and should not be a matter of concern.
He said the Pakistan People’s Party had pursued politics of reconciliation and had always been taking along other political forces with it. He said all political forces in Sindh were with the PPP and the party had decided to take along all forces in the province for smooth running of the administration and for peace and stability. Referring to the law and order situation in Karachi, Zardari underscored the need for equipping law enforcement authorities and the police with modern tools to fight criminals in an effective manner.
Separately, Zardari also felicitated Abdul Qadir Gilani on his electoral victory in the by-elections of NA-151 Multan. agencies
