Ramazan starts today
Staff Report
KARACHI/PESHAWAR: The holy month of Ramazan has commenced with religious zeal and respect, as the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee on Friday night announced the sighting of the crescent.
Committee chief Mufti Muneebur Rahman chaired the session of the committee, held at the Weather Department’s Headquarters in Karachi, and announced that Ramazan crescent had been sighted at various locations across the country, particularly in Dera Ghazi Khan and Shahpur.
He said that skies in most cities were overcast, however, several areas were clear. He said that witnesses were examined on technical as well as sharai bases.
Earlier, an unofficial moon-sighting body declared Saturday the first of Ramazan, saying it had received evidences from different areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Mufti Shahbuddin Popalzai of Qasim Ali Khan Mosque received the evidences, mostly from southern Bannu district.
Mosque caretaker Mufti Popalzai told local journalists that evidences he had received were undeniable.
Mufti Popalzai’s decision of announcing the commencement of Ramazan has always been controversial; dividing residents of Peshawar and the rest of the country over the issue of the holy month’s arrival.
Reports said that the body at Qasim Ali Khan Mosque received 13 evidences from Bannu alone.
