ISLAMABAD: The Awami National Party (ANP) and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), the two rival parties in the Pakistan People’s Party- (PPP) coalition government, on Wednesday agreed to work together to bring peace in Karachi.

According to details, an MQM delegation led by Dr Farooq Sattar visited the Khyber Pakhtukhwa House and held discussion with ANP’s Senator Haji Adeel over political situation of the country. ANP Sindh Chapter President Shahi Syed was also present during the talks.

This visit is a part of MQM’s ongoing move to invite leaders of all mainstream political parties to a roundtable conference seeking solutions to the issues confronting the country, especially Karachi.

The two parties agreed to take action against every criminal without any discrimination. The ANP leaders accepted the MQM’s invitation to visit the party's headquarters in Karachi.

Addressing a joint press conference after the meeting, Farooq Sattar and Haji Adeel said they wanted peace in Karachi and would support action against all types of mafias. Sattar said the ANP and MQM would jointly foil any conspiracy against Karachi. He apprised the ANP leader of the need to convene a round-table conference. "All religious and political parties, even the armed forces, should come together at a round-table conference to formulate a strategy for the country's security and survival. No single party is in a position to handle the situation alone," he Sattar.

Both parties also discussed the situation in Karachi. They were trying to defeat those who were conspiring against the city, said Sattar, adding that the delegation had also discussed extremism and the ongoing sectarianism in the city.

He said that he had also invited the ANP leaders to visit MQM headquarters, adding that absence of government's writ was the cause of violence in Karachi.
