Rabbani to visit Pakistan for Afghan peace talks

ISLAMABAD: To facilitate peace talks between the Afghan government and Taliban, Afghan Peace Council (APC) Chairman Salahuddin Rabbani will visit Pakistan in the third week of August.

Pakistani officials invited him to visit the country after he was elected as chairman of the council, after his father Burhanuddin Rabbani was assassinated in a suicide attack last years.

Afghan Embassy’s spokesman Zardasht Shams confirmed that head of the peace council would visit Pakistan and hoped that the visit would help in facilitating peace in Afghanistan and the region. “Salahuddin would meet senior civil and security officials, officials of the ministry of foreign affairs and others.” Salahuddin, son of Burhanuddin Rabbani, would also hold discussion with Pakistani officials on reconciliation among Afghan factions other than Taliban as well, official sources said. Pakistan has already announced its support to Afghan-led reconciliation process. Taliban are ready for negotiations with the US but not with the government in Kabul. “Now when NATO is going to quit Afghanistan both Kabul and Islamabad are worried about the future of peace in the region,” said an official requesting anonymity. staff report
