Salman Farooqi’s appointment: court seeks salary record

* Transparency International-Pakistan official says Farooqi still federal ombudsman in PID record

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered the Accountant General of Pakistan Revenue (AGPR) to submit the copy of salary cheques and last pay certificate (LPC) of Salman Farooqi as the federal ombudsman.

A three-member bench, headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, heard the case regarding the appointment of Salman Farooqi as the federal ombudsman.

Transparency International-Pakistan Adviser Syed Adil Gillani appeared before the court and contended that according to the record of the Press Information Department and the Presidency, Salman Farooqi was still the acting federal ombudsman.

Waseem Sajjad, counsel for Salman Farooqi, did not appear and sent a request for adjournment.

The court also directed the AGPR to place on record the relevant summary issued for the opening of Salman Farooqi’s salary account.

The Ombudsman Secretariat was also asked to submit copies of a notification through which Salman Farooqi was granted leave, as well as a copy of the no-objection certificate that allowed Farooqi to go abroad for his wife’s medical treatment.

The court ordered the AGPR to submit the certified copies of the receipt register through which Farooqi’s appointment notification was received.

The AGPR was also asked to produce certified copies of issuance of pay slips to Salman Farooqi as the former secretary general to the president of Pakistan, along with copies of notifications of relinquishing the charge of his earlier position.

The head of the Printing Corporation of Pakistan was directed to submit a copy of the gazette of oath taken by Salman Farooqi as the federal ombudsman on March 1, 2013.

The Ministry of Law and Justice secretary was ordered to submit the copies of notifications of appointments of the federal ombudsman, and the ombudsman for the Secretariat for Protection against Harassment of Women at Workplace today (Thursday). The case was adjourned until today.
