SC to continue striving for peoples interest: CJ

ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry Friday said that the apex court kept struggling to safeguard the people’s interests and would contiune to do so, Geo News reported.

SC three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry was hearing the case relating to the petroleum products’ price-hike.

During the hearing CJ enquired from the Attorney General why the amounts amassed through corruption were not being recovered and why the government was shifting the entire burden of the shortfall to the citizens?

CJ told AG that the court has to be given satisfactory justification for additional 9 percent increase in sales tax on CNG, as GST law says it would be 17 percent and added that whatever additional tax levied is ultimately shifted to the people to bear it--corruption has gone beyond the limit--theft galore from top to bottom—gas supply not enough to supply for power generation, while OGRA gave permission to set up 17 CNG stations in area of 3 kilometers.

The Chief Justice also enquired from AG how much additional tax was recovered during July 1, 2007 to July 1, 2013?

Later, the court adjourned the hearing until July 24
