Lyari protests take a violent turn on Mauripur road

KARACHI: Unidentified armed men on Friday opened fire on a protest being taken out by residents of Lyari on Mauripur road.

Residents of Lyari a gang infested neighbourhood in Karachi had taken to Mauripur road to protest against the killing of three area residents earlier on Friday. Police used aerial firing and water cannons to disperse the protesters who were part of a funeral procession when unknown armed men opened fire from nearby rooftops and trenches.

The firing continued for several hours on Mauripur road bringing traffic to a standstill.

Meanwhile several protestors staged a sit in outside the Chief Minister House demanding the arrest of target killers and extortionists.

The protest on Mauripur road and outside the Chief Minister House were called off while law enforcement personnel have initiated an operation against armed men in the Agra Taj Colony of Lyari.
