Appointment of NAB chief: PPP, PTI not on same page
By Tanveer Ahmed
ISLAMABAD: The opposition parties – the Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarians (PPPP) and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) – are not yet on the same page on names proposed by the opposition leader for the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) chairman.
Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah on Thursday hoped to evolve a consensus with the government on NAB chairman’s appointment. However, he is yet to reach on an agreement with the PTI for the names proposed by him for the slot.
The opposition leader suggested the names of Justice (r) Sardar Raza Khan and Justice (r) Mamoon Qazi after the government opened the discussion to fill the key post of NAB chief when Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif forwarded the names of Justice (t) Rahmat Hussain Jafari and Khawja Zaheer for it.
“The PTI was not consulted by the opposition leader. Our Central Executive Committee (CEC) will meet on Friday to discuss the issue,” PTI’s Central Information Secretary Dr Shirin Mazari told Daily Times on Thursday.
The opposition leader is not required to consult with other opposition parties to propose the name for the NAB chief.
However, for the broader consensus among the ranks of opposition parties, he wanted to consult with other parliamentary groups in the opposition, a PPP lawmaker commented.
The PPPP and the PTI being on different wave lengths is also reflected from Khursheed Shah’s statement on Thursday when he told the media that the PTI and the MQM did not contact him back on NAB chief’s consultation process after he approached them.
Although the opposition leader did ask the PTI’s deputy parliamentary leader Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi if the PTI would like to suggest any names for the NAB chairman; the names he gave to the government were never suggested by the PTI deputy parliamentary leader nor was approval or support for the same sought from the PTI’s leadership by the PPP opposition leader, Dr Mazari added.
