PPP demands parliament approve IMF loan deal

ISLAMABAD: Leader of the opposition in National Assembly Syed Khurshid Shah has called for obtaining approval from parliament for the loan that has been negotiated with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Talking to media persons outside the Parliament House on Friday he said that the PPP-led government allowed subsidy of Rs 1400 billion on power while the present government has increased the burden on public by taking it back. He said that the PML-N has deviated from its stance by negotiating a loan with the IMF and by increasing the general sales tax (GST). Shah said that the PPP-led had government returned $3.5 billion loan to the IMF. He asked the PML-N government to make public the details of the loans taken by the PPP government.

“We left foreign exchange reserves of $4.5 billion for the government, increased the exports from $18 billion to $36 billion, took tax recoveries up to $2000 billion “, he added. He said that consensus should be built on the candidates for the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) chairman by July 5 by following the decision of the Supreme Court. The opposition, he said, will not nominate any biased person or someone having affiliation with any party. “We will see how the government works with us on legislation. If the government neglected us it will have to face difficulties in Senate,” he declared.

The NA opposition leader said his party will nominate candidates for the presidential election in consultation with the opposition and allied parties. Shah said the opposition would participate in the presidential elections with full force. “The opposition has started making preparations to participate in the polls for the office of the president,” he remarked. President Asif Ali Zardari’s tenure is going to end on September 1 and it is a constitutional obligation that the presidential elections be held a month before the expiry of the term of a sitting president. Therefore, the presidential elections will take place between July 9 and August 9. agencies
