Zardari calls for APC to restore peace in Karachi

* President sets up three-member committee to hold dialogue with MQM

* Asks security agencies to ensure intelligence sharing

KARACHI: President Asif Ali Zardari has issued directive for calling an all-parties conference (APC) for restoration of peace in Karachi, and constituted a three-member committee to hold dialogue with Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM).

He presided over a high-level meeting at the Presidential Camp Office, Bilawal House, on the law and order situation in Karachi.

The three-point plan includes using existing police force to combat crime and involving stakeholders and area people in peace efforts; transferring ‘failed’ police officers to other districts and replacing them with competent officials; and thirdly handing over control of 40 sensitive police stations of the metropolis, including Lyari to Pakistan Rangers, Sindh.

According to official sources, it was decided at the meeting that some 40 police stations would be given in administrative control of Sindh Rangers in the third phase, and other law enforcement agencies would assist them. After the meeting, Rehman Malik stressed that concerted efforts should be made for the maintenance of law and order and peace in Karachi, as well as the rest of the country. Talking to the media, he said that three provinces were facing the problem of terrorism. “We should join hands to tackle this challenge.” staff report/agencies
