Government should act against illegal Jirgas: SC

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court has directed the federal and provincial governments to take action against illegal Jirgas.

The apex court was hearing the suo moto case against the Rajanpur Jirga. During proceedings, police informed the court that the Jirga head along with other accused had been arrested and action was being taken against them.

Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry remarked that the suo moto was taken after the report of a man being given an inhuman punishment by a Jirga in Rajanpur was broadcast on Geo News.

The chief justice further remarked that Jirgas were only in places where the police had failed. The apex court in its order directed that people be made aware of illegal Jirgas.
