Talking to VOA, United Nations Information Centre correspondent Ishrat Rizvi said that the UN had been working in Pakistan for 66 years, and it had performed in various sectors and supported the government of Pakistan in different fields.
“Moreover, Pakistan is a member of Peacekeeping Nations and in various operations it has proved its strength. The UN has helped Pakistan to overcome polio,” she added.
World Food Programme (WFP) spokesman Dr Amjad Jamal said, “We have been working since 1968 and the World Food Programme works in time of disasters, whether manmade or natural.”
He said the WFP helps people by providing the very basic need. “Even after the emergency time, it helps the people in rehabilitation or recovery by providing cash or food.”
Dr Jamal said, “We have a vulnerability and analysis section that deals with assessing different families in disaster-hit areas, and we include those families in our programme that are very poor and cannot afford food. This work is done in collaboration with government departments. We design programmes according to funds available.”
Dr Nadeem said that the basic aim of UN organisations working in the country was to increase the government’s capacity to control the issue of drugs and crimes related to it. “After the 18th Amendment, the United Nation Office on Drugs and Crime has to work with provincial as well as with district administrations,” he added.
