Nawaz govt warned against witch-hunting
ISLAMABAD: Opposition leader in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah claimed on Friday that the Nawaz government has not learnt any lesson from the past and is treading the path of political victimisation and vilification of Pakistan People’s Party through media as it had done in the 1990s.
Shah said that the reports about two former provincial ministers from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Rahim Dad Khan and Zahir, being summoned by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in the OGRA case seemed to have been planted by the government to test waters. He said that it appeared that the government wanted to divert attention from the scandal of escalation in cost of the Nandipur power project and “questionable payments” for the clearance of the circular debt.
The opposition leader said that it is unfortunate that the Nawaz regime is resorting to the tactics of former NAB chief Saifur Rehman who created an environment of harassment in the country and chased away foreign investors. Shah warned the government against witch-hunting and said that the PPP will not be deterred by such tactics.
Shah also said that any change in the presidential election’s schedule would be unconstitutional. While talking to a local TV, the opposition leader said that the presidential election should be held according to the schedule and any change will be considered as failure of the Election Commission of Pakistan. Regarding the appointment of NAB chairman, he said that names of Bhagwandas and Sardar Raza have been suggested to the government to fill the slot. “We said that legal hurdles in the appointment of Bhagwandas as NAB chairman could be removed when the government said that his appointment couldn’t be made due to legal hurdles,” he maintained. He said a meeting with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in this regard is likely on July 22. staff report
