‘Karachi has turned into a garbage site’
Staff Report
KARACHI: Due to negligence and incompetence on part of municipal bodies, Karachi has become a garbage dump, stated a survey conducted by the National Forum for Environment and Health (NFEH).
The survey informed that after imposition of the Municipal Act 1979, conditions have deteriorated further. Currently, 25 tonnes of garbage is produced in the city, of which only 25 percent is being disposed off, said the report.
NFEH claimed that streets of the city have become a dumping site for garbage, except for the posh areas.
The situation is particularly worse in the areas between Sindh Hotel and post office, Karimabad, Musa Colony, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Surjani Town, and New Karachi.
The report said garbage is piled up in all sectors of North Karachi which has not been picked up for the past few months. Due to this situation, citizens suffer from pollution, smell, and diseases in Ramazan.
President NFEH Muhammad Naeem Qureshi has said that after the imposition of Municipal Act of 1979, the conditions of hygiene have deteriorated seriously and the political parties, media and city organisations are watching silently and doing nothing.
He further added that the city government and bureaucracy have converted the city into a dumpsite saturated with pollution and smog. He appealed to political parties, NGOs and media to pressurise the political leadership and management, or else, there would be a danger of outbreak of disease.
Qureshi also appealed to Governor Sindh and Chief Minister to take note of the situation and launch a cleaning campaign, with the imposition of municipal emergency.
