AJK PM faces no-trust move; 6 ministers resign
* PPP’s Barrister Sultan Mehmood likely to be new Leader of the House
MUZZAFARABAD: Six ministers from the cabinet of Azad Jammu and Kashmir Prime Minister Chaudhry Abdul Majeed resigned on Monday following the submission of a no-confidence motion against the premier by two assembly members from the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).
The motion was moved by PPP’s Mohammad Hussain and Majid Khan, following which three advisers tendered their resignations. They proposed the name of Barrister Sultan Mehmood Chaudhry, who also belongs to PPP, as alternative leader of the House. According to sources, the six ministers and three advisers will be voting in favour of the no-confidence motion against Majeed. Under the constitution, speaker of the legislative assembly must summon an assembly session within three to seven days to debate the move. If passed, it is likely that PPP leader Barrister Sultan Mehmood will be elected as new prime minister.
Insiders say that the movers of the no-confidence motion would require the support of PPP (Barrister Sultan group), PML-N and Muslim Conference to succeed. An agreement has reportedly been reached between the three groups about sharing of the cabinet posts after the success of the motion. Chaudhry Abdul Majeed of PPP’s AJK chapter was sworn in as the 11th prime minister of Azad Kashmir in 2011. He was born in 1948 in the Tangdev village of AJK’s Mirpur District and is a 1969 law graduate from Karachi’s SM Law College.
Majeed joined the PPP in 1979 and became a speaker of the legislative assembly in 2008. He has also served as a minister in the 1996 PPP government. After the death of the opposition leader Sahibzada Muhammad Ishaq Zaffar in 2006, he was appointed to the position. The same year, he was appointed as the president of PPP AJK. agencies
