PML-N finalises name of Mamnoon as candidate
By Tanveer Ahmed
ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has nominated Mamnoon Hussain as its presidential candidate against Pakistan People’s Party’s (PPP) Senator Raza Rabbani, who succeeded to bag the support of PML-Q and BNP-Awami on Tuesday.
Although the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has nominated Justice (r) Wajihuddin as its candidate for presidential election but the party apparently went into slumber as no campaign is being carried to garner support for its candidate. The major development came in the nomination of Mamnoon Hussain as PML-N candidate, leaving out Sartaj Azia and Justice (r) Saeeduzzaman from the race for presidential candidate of the ruling party. The party will formally announce its decision today (Wednesday).
On the other hand, the PPP succeeded in winning the support of PML-Q which announced to withdraw its candidate Senator Saeed Mandokhel in favour of Raza Rabbani. A high-level delegation of PPP, including its President Amin Fahim, Opposition Leader in National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah and Opposition Leader in Senate Aitzaz Ahsan, met PML-Q President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain at his residence.
Later talking to the media, Shujaat announced to withdraw its candidate in favour of Raza Rabbani. “Our candidate Saeed Mandohhel will not file nomination papers for presidential elections,” Shujaat announced.
Earlier in the day at a joint parliamentary meeting of PPP, ANP and BNP-Awami at Parliament House, ANP and BNP-Awami threw their weight behind Rabbani for the president election. The PPP has also requested the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to extend its support to Raza Rabbani for the post of president.
