Mamnoon’s election to be a good omen: Nawaz
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said on Wednesday he hoped that Mamnoon Hussain’s election as president would serve as a good omen for the people of smaller provinces.
He expressed these views while talking to Balochistan senior minister Sanaullah Zehri and Minister for SAFRON Abdul Qadir Baloch.
The prime minister informed the two leaders that the PML-N’s presidential candidate was chosen from Sindh with the intention to give smaller federating units their due share and representation at the federal level.
Congratulating the prime minister on the nomination of Hussain, Zehri and Baloch expressed the hope that his election as president of Pakistan would help strengthen the federation by fostering harmonious relationship among its various institutions.
Hussain, a veteran politician and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s trusted ally, is expected to win next week’s presidential election.
Traditionally presidents have been figureheads in Pakistan although incumbent President Asif Ali Zardari, whose term expires in September, wielded considerable influence under the previous administration.
Hussain, an active member of PML-N since 1960s, is seen as the front-runner to replace Zardari in the July 30 vote. Presidents in the country are elected by an electoral college made up of members of the two houses of parliament and members of assemblies in four provinces – Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Baluchistan. Hussain filed his nomination papers for the presidential elections on Wednesday. agencies
