Senators demand resignation from CJP over ‘biased’ decision
ISLAMABAD: The senators on Monday came down hard on the verdict of the Supreme Court that changed the presidential election schedule from August 6 to July 30 and demanded resignation form Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry over what they termed a biased decision.
The proceedings of the Senate were dominated by the Pakistan People’s Party-Parliamentarians (PPP-P) stalwarts, including opposition leader in Senate Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahmad, Raza Rabbani, Saeed Ghani and ANP Senators Haji Mohammad Adeel, Zahid Khan and others, who severely criticised the verdict of the Supreme Court on the presidential election. The opposition senators were of the view that decisions of the Supreme Court looks biased, which is not right for the apex court.
Speaking on the occasion, ANP’s Senator Zahid Khan regretted that heads of different independent organisations (Supreme Court and ECP) consider themselves above the law. He said the track record of the chief justice of Pakistan is not good, “although we fought hard for the supremacy and restoration of judiciary”. Khan said setting the schedule for the presidential election is the duty of the ECP, and the Supreme Court cannot order change in schedule. The ANP senator claimed that the chief justice has became controversial and must resign from his post.
Khan also said that the chief election commission of Pakistan also has to resign from his post. Zahid Khan said that despite the worst law and order situation, withdrawing security from ANP’s leaders in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan and Sindh is deplorable. “If it was withdrawn on the directives of the Supreme Court, or the prime minister, or the provincial governments, then the FIR will be registered against the person in whose area any incident occurs,” Khan said.
Earlier, PPPP’s Senator Raza Rabbani said that his party contacted all opposition parties for fielding a joint candidate for the presidential election. But in the meantime, a petition was filed in the Supreme Court by the ruling party for the change of the election schedule and it was accepted and the election schedule was changed. “This decision was totally against the 18th, 19th and 20th amendments by parliament to strengthen the ECP,” the ANP senator said. ijaz kakakhel
