Pakistan’s MPs meet top British officials

LONDON – A five-member parliamentary delegation led by National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq held meetings with Lord Speaker Baroness D'Souza and House of Commons Speaker John Bercow at the Houses of Parliament.

Besides they also attended briefings on UK's audit system, parliamentary outreach, and Speaker's Parliamentary Placement Scheme, said a message from the Pakistan High Commission in the United Kingdom. Speaker Bercow welcomed the delegation and showed keen interest in the working of the parliament in Pakistan.

Speaker Sadiq presented one year performance report to his British counterpart and briefed him on the new initiatives taken in order to improve the performance of the National Assembly of Pakistan. Both the speakers shared their experiences in the chair when they have to keep the delicate balance between the treasury and the opposition.

Speaker Sadiq praised the British tradition of not contesting against the speaker. He invited his British counterpart to the 2015 Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) General Assembly in Pakistan to which the latter agreed to attend provided if his schedule permitted.

MNA Mehmood Achakzai underlined the need to support nascent democracies in the world especially in the Commonwealth countries. During their meeting with the lord speaker, both sides discussed ways and means to enhance co-operation between their respective parliaments.

Speaker Sadiq informed Baroness D'Souza that following the British Parliamentary Studies Programme, National Assembly had also developed its own programme which was being dove-tailed into Pakistani system. The two sides agreed to continue sharing their experiences in future as well.

They also discussed exchange of internees between the two parliaments. The other members of the delegation were MNA Raja Javed Ikhlas, MNA Dr Darshan and MNA Dr Arif Alvi. Acting High Commissioner Imran Mirza accompanied the delegation during the meetings.
