President grants prisoners special Eid remission

ISLAMABAD: Carrying on with the tradition of reducing the “jail time” for nominated rehabilitated prisoners across the country, President Mamnoon Hussain on Wednesday granted the permission to be carried out on the forthcoming Eidul Fitr. According to details, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had sent a message to the president from Saudi Arabia for keeping on with the age-old practice. The special reductions of jail time does not apply to the prisoners who have been convicted against heinous crimes such as anti-state activities, spying, murder, rape, homicide, sectarianism, robberies, kidnappings, abductions, subversions, involvement in terrorist related acts, those convicted against the Foreigners Act 1946 and Anti-Terrorism Act (Second Amendment) Ordinance 1999. The special remissions would be admissible provided that the convicts have undergone 2/3rd of their substantive sentence of imprisonment. Total remission has been granted to male prisoners who are 65 years of age or above and the female prisoners who are 60 years of age or above and have undergone at least 1/3rd of their substantive sentence of imprisonment, except those involved in culpable homicide and terrorist acts. For female rehabilitated prisoners, a lighter grant has been approved by the president, granting reduction in jail time for those having endured 1/3rd of their imprisonment time. Special remission of one year has been allowed to female prisoners who have accompanying children and are serving sentence of imprisonment for crimes other than culpable homicide and terrorism. Lastly the grant for “pardoning entire jail time” has been facilitated for young rehabilitated prisoners falling below the age of 18 years, provided they have endured 1/3rd of their imprisonment time.
