ISLAMABAD: A Supreme Court bench has observed that the efforts of the NAB in weeding out corruption were laudable and corruption will have to be eradicated. While hearing a case on 150 mega corruption cases on Thursday, Justice Jawwad S Khawaja has remarked, “We have become slaves of the IMF and the World Bank and we fly to Dubai all at once when they call us.” He remarked, “We appreciate the efforts of chairman NAB for weeding out corruption. The court is with him in his endeavours against corruption because elimination of corruption is not only the NAB’s target but also a common target of the entire country and institutions. Corruption will have to be eradicated.”

He observed, “On the one hand, we are wandering with bagging bowl in our hand and on the other hand new corruption cases surface every day. Corruption of Rs 70 billion on account of grey trafficking, Rs 1,600 million of railway land and 83 billion of OGRA has come to the fore while much more is still going on the corruption front outside the judiciary.” The court sought reply from federation and Punjab government on construction of Dosha dam and DHA on one and the same land.

At the inception of hearing, a report with regard to Rs 265 billion recoveries was presented before the court. The court remarked, “It will review this report which will be discussed on next hearing.” Justice Khawaja said that the NAB should tell the court about the proceedings it has initiated with respect to the projects, which have not been completed. The NAB deputy prosecutor told the court that the inquiry into the case would be completed this year. The court adjourned the hearing until July 23.
