Asia-Pacific telecom regulators to meet in Islamabad

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) are jointly organising ITU-PTA Asia-Pacific regulators’ roundtable and an international training programme.

The events will be held from July 18 to July 22 in Islamabad, where representatives from 23 countries across the Asia-Pacific region will participate. Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Anusha Rahman, ITU Secretary General Houlin Zhao and PTA Chairman Ismial Shah will specially attend the session, along with other representatives from telecom mobile operators, internet service providers, academic institutions, banks, entrepreneurs and commercial companies.

The roundtable is the sixth consecutive time the Asia-Pacific region took the initiative to organise the annual roundtable to provide telecommunication/ICT regulators in the region with a platform that fosters dynamic and strategic discussions, sharing information, relevant experiences and practices as well as conclusively debate on possible solutions and opportunities for potential collaboration to address the emerging regulatory issues and challenges. This is being held in Pakistan for the first time.

The training programme will be held from July 20 to 22 and will build skills to address the policy and regulatory issues in the era beyond convergence of telecommunications and information technology. It will bring together international experiences with a focus on enhancing Pakistan’s experiences.

In particular, the event will focus on the implications of a digital society for collaborative regulation and will highlight the building blocks required to ensure regulatory measures relevant and appropriate for the new environment.

Some of the key topics that will be taken up in training sessions are broadband for networked society, digital financial inclusion, mobile apps, cyber security, consumer protection and quality of Service, regulatory impact assessment, spectrum management and ICT for persons with disabilities and women empowerment.
