Shoaib Sheikh jailed for 7 years, wife acquitted in Axact fake degree case
Axact Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Shoaib Ahmed Shaikh and 22 others have been sentenced to seven years in jail in Axact fake degree scandal case.
District and Sessions Judge Chaudhry Mumtaz Hussain announced the verdict in the case on Thursday.
Shaoib Shaikh’s wife Aysha Shoaib has been acquitted in the case.
Sheikh and others were sentenced to 3 years each under sections 419 and 420 of Pakistan Penal Code, and fined Rs0.3 million each. They were also sentenced to 7 years each under sections 468 and 471, and fined Rs1 million each.
The Axact scandal was surfaced in May last year when an international newspaper published a report that claimed the company had sold fake diplomas and degrees online, making “tens of millions of dollars annually”.
Subsequently the offices of Axact were sealed, its CEO and key officials were arrested and a probe was launched on the basis of the allegations levelled by the newspaper.
