Dr Basit not representing govt now
* Lawyer for federation claims he withdrew power of attorney, AG says he was removed
Staff Report
ISLAMABAD: Dr Abdul Basit on Tuesday claimed that he had withdrawn his power of attorney of representing the federation in the Supreme Court in petitions against the18th Amendment.
However, Attorney General Maulvi Anwarul Haq said Dr Basit had been removed by the federation.
Dr Basit said it had been his own decision and he voluntarily took back his power of attorney to plead the case on part of the federal government.
The lawyer said he took the decision on misconduct and misperception on part of the Supreme Court.
The move came as fallout of Monday’s hearings on several identical petitions against the 18th Amendment.
Basit was asked by the chief justice on Monday to divulge to the court the name of the person who objected to the formation of a larger bench to hear the petitions. The bench also issued a show-cause notice to Basit for misleading the court by attributing objections raised by him on the bench’s formation to Salman Farooqi, the secretary general to the president.
