Singh faces severe criticism during Held Kashmir visit

* APHC says human rights violations and dialogue cannot go side by side
* CPI-Marxist terms LoC encounter a ‘national shame’

NEW DELHI: Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh faced criticism from both pro and anti-Indian political parties during his two-day visit to Srinagar, over the rising human rights violations, particularly the killing of three youths in fake encounters at the Line of Control (LoC).

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, the chairman of the moderate faction of All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) said, “Human rights violations and dialogue do not walk together.”

Making clear that APHC was committed to a meaningful dialogue with New Delhi, Mirwaiz demanded that India must repeal harsh detention laws, release hundreds of political prisoners and withdraw hundreds of thousands of army soldiers from the region before any dialogue.

The Communist Party of India - Marxist delegation, headed by Mohammed Yusuf Tarigami, termed the LoC encounters as a ‘national shame’ and sought early disposal of the case.

Opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) claimed that the constant abuse of human rights had almost nullified the gains of the peace initiative in the state since their party, along with the Congress, was at the helm of affairs.

Meanwhile, the delegation of the ruling National Conference, which was led by its senior leader Chowdhury Muhammed Ramzan, sought an early resumption of dialogue with the Hurriyat Conference.
