Senate Body to probe PIA Management's violations

ISLAMABAD: Deputy Chairman Senate Jan Muhammad Jamali Thursday referred the matters related to violations of the management of Pakistan International Airlines to Senate Standing Committee on Defence.

The point regarding PIA Management's violations was raised by Senator Raza Rabbani who had mentioned its discriminatory attitude towards elected union and not listening to their demands.

"The management is not ready to talk to union on charter of demand which is benefiting a specific bunch of employees," Rabbani said and described it against the Constitution.

He said Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani in his first speech had announced to lift ban on trade unions but in PIA there is still 'MD Martial Law' as neither he is ready to listen nor to accept demands of the union.

"Cockpit crew enjoys best perks but other workers including flight service workers and cabin crew were permanently being ignored," he stated.

Rabbani said the Constitution provides for right to union and association making and not recognizing an elected union is violation of the constitution.

He demanded to send the matter to Standing Committee, which was proposed by Leader of the House Nayyer Hussain Bokhari to be deferred till the Defence Minister presents his viewpoint. But the Chair honouring the plea of Raza Rabbani referred the matter to Standing Committee.

On another point, Rabbani criticized KESC for failing to fulfil obligation to provide power to Karachi people but increased the tariff.

He said not only the KESC management terminated 400 employees but it has also issued show cause notices to union office bearers.

He said if KESC cannot fulfil it obligations then there is provision in the law to nationalize it again.

The Chair suggested to the Leader of the House to assure presence of Minister for water and Power to the House on Friday and reply to the point.

Leader of the Opposition, Waseem Sajjad drew the attention of the government towards arrest of a Pakistani student in Chile and said, the foreign mission could not extend necessary assistance.
