PML-N to support 18th Amendment in SC, says Nawaz

* PML-N chief says judicial commission apt system for judges’ appointment
* Govt’s woes won’t end until Malik, Awan are sacked

LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif said on Thursday that his party would defend the 18th Constitutional Amendment in the Supreme Court (SC) but would not favour the National Reconciliation Order, a private television channel said.

The PML-N chief, talking to media at the Punjab House, said that the National Judicial Commission had been formed according to the Charter of Democracy. A single person should not have the authority to appoint the judges of the superior courts, he said, and therefore the commission was very appropriate for this purpose. He said that the supremacy of the parliament must be maintained, adding that all the institutions should play their role within their set parameters. The situation of the country is worsening due to ineligibility and botched policies of the government, he added.

Nawaz said that the whole system of the country was at stake due to the incompetence of the government. The government’s worries would not ease until Interior Minister Rehman Malik and Law Minister Babar Awan remain in the federal cabinet, he said. He added that he had advised the prime minister to rid the government from Malik and Awan. The PML-N chief also regretted the pardon granted to Malik by President Asif Ali Zardari.

The PML-N chief said that he has no ‘contact’ with the judiciary, the army or the president. The present government wants a clash between the institutions but the PML-N would foil it, he added.

He said the judiciary should take suo motu notices of the May 12 killings in Karachi, the murder of Nawab Akbar Bugti, the Lal Masjid incident, and the issue of missing persons, the channel said.

Nawaz said that the Taliban should not be categorised on a provincial basis as they are not Punjabi, Pathan or Baloch. The Taliban should be identified as Taliban only, he said, adding that they were our ‘own people’, yet bad policies had turned them against us.

He said no one had restricted former president Pervez Musharraf from returning to the country, adding that he, however, would never come back. The PML-N chief said that he supported the idea of the imposition of an agricultural tax, adding that an agriculture tax must be imposed in the country but its fruits or outcome should be delivered to the poor farmers. He said the government is not performing well, due to which a law and order situation prevails across the country. The government will have to improve its performance if it wants to complete its tenure of five year, he said. daily times monitor/online
