Foreign policy should promote peace: PM

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: The country’s foreign policy should be calibrated to promote regional peace, enhance exports and cultivate friendly relations with all nations in the world, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani said on Friday.

“My economic team has formulated investor-friendly policies and now there is a great opportunity for foreign investors to invest in Pakistan,” Gilani said while talking to Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi at the Prime Minister’s House.

The prime minister observed that foreign businessmen were investing in the energy and infrastructure projects, but there was an urgent need to attract foreign investors to other sectors of the economy.

Sources said the foreign minister briefed the prime minister about follow-up meetings of Pak-US strategic dialogue, as a number of US delegates are arriving in Pakistan next week to kick off talks on water and power, energy, trade and economic issues.

They said Qureshi briefed Gilani on Pak-India relations and the forthcoming meeting of the two foreign ministers in Islamabad, expected to be held by the end of this month.

The sources added that the prime minister emphasised the need of enhancing trade relations with other countries. The foreign minister also apprised Gilani about his meeting with Turkish President Abdullah Gül, informing him that Turkey would support Pakistan’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat of the UN Security Council.
