Pakistan elected vice president for UNGA’s 65th session

UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan was unanimously elected as a vice president of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA)’s 65th session on Friday, which opens in mid-September for its annual debate on issues of war and peace. The unanimous election took place at the assembly’s plenary meeting, which chose Joseph Deiss, a former Swiss leader, as the president of the 192-member body for a period of one year. Pakistan’s candidature for the vice president slot was endorsed by the Asian Group at its meeting in last October. The UNGA has 21 vice presidents, each representing a different geographical region. The five permanent members of the UN Security Council also serve as vice presidents. Pakistan had last served as the UNGA’s vice president during its 60th session in 2005. app
