Senators concerned over Karachi situation


ISLAMABAD: The Upper House of the Parliament Tuesday expressed grave concern over law and order situation and sectarian violence in Karachi and sought a report from Federal Interior Minister on the issue.

The senators were of the view that anti state elements were hatching conspiracies to disrupt peace of the provincial capital as well as to derail the economy by creating panic in the economic hub (Karachi) of the country.

Responding to the queries, Interior Minister A Rehman Malik sought Ulemas' help to overcome the menace of sectarian killing. After failing to stoke ethnic violence some hidden forces are bent upon instigating sectarian clashes, he told the House.

Senator Safdar Abbasi on a point of order raised the issue of violence in Liyari area of Karachi and said that the Interior Minister should take the House into confidence regarding the situation.

Deputy Chairman Senate Jan Jamali also expressed apprehension over the situation and said that the incidents of target killing were of serious concern.

ANP leader Zahid Khan said that innocent people were being killing in Karachi and there was no writ of the government in the provincial capital.

He said the Interior Minister should apprise the House about the steps taken so far.

Salim Saifullah said the government must tell that who were behind these acts of violence.

Professor Khurshid said that the incidents of violence were part of a conspiracy to disturb the peace of Karachi.

Adviser to Prime Minister Raza Rabbani said that the series of incidents of violence were part of organized conspiracy to make the country a market of multi national companies.

He said that when we were in opposition we opposed the privatization of KESC, but it was privatized and Karachi was plunged into darkness. The loadshedding has paralyzed the industries in Karachi.

He said the sectarian violence in Karachi was aimed at destabilizing Sindh province politically and economically, which would ultimately affect the country's economy, he added.

Mulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri said the government should utilize all its resources to curb the incidents of violence and sectarianism in Karachi as well as in the country.

Abdul Rahim Mandokhel said that security agencies should give report about the incidents and the people behind those.

Maulla Baksh Chandio said it appears that law and order situation is being created in Karachi to destabilize the country's economy.

Tahir Hussain Mashhadi said the issue of sectarianism was a conspiracy, which was not limited to the territorial boundaries of Karachi but a problem in Quetta and other cities of the country.

He appreciated President Asif Ali Zardari for taking personnel interest for the resolution of the issue, adding that MQM had held a meeting with Interior Minister A. Rehman Malik and it was observed that action is needed in Karachi.

Leader of the House Syed Nayyer Hussain Bokhari said the government is alive of the situation in Karachi and therefore the President visited Karachi and held meeting with Provincial government.

He said instability in Karachi would affect the economy of the country and it is need of the hour to resolve the issue.

Bokhari said Interior Minister would brief the House on Thursday regarding the situation in Karachi and steps being taken so far.
